What is Teachable?

Teachable is a learning management system (LMS) that offers the ability to take payments, run an affiliate center, manage course content, view reporting, and more. Teachable is a cloud LMS which means they’ll take care of hosting your course platform for you as well as the security and maintenance of your platform.

Who Teachable is For:

The ideal user is an online course creator looking for a nearly all-in-one solution. Teachable is a hosted/cloud LMS which means they will keep your system running and updated. However, you cannot customize your course and your course business set-up with a hosted LMS to the extent you can customize one you run on your own hosting account. If you’d rather sacrifice customizations for ease of use and speed to set-up, then Teachable is a great option. With Teachable all you will really need is a domain name and an email marketing tool to follow-up with your prospects and clients.

If you want a more robust site, you’ll also need to pay for hosting, install WordPress or build your site out with a site builder. Other than those components, Teachable really is an all-in-one solution.

Skill Level:

Teachable is actually pretty easy to use, however there are so many features it will take you some time to get everything set up. In addition, some integrations require Zapier which means additional time to sort out.

You’ll access your dashboard from an online account. You can set everything up from within this account including your payment system, your entire course, all the content within your course, your course sales page, affiliate center, and everything else.

Special Features:

You can upload your course content including videos without the need for video hosting with Teachable. In addition, Teachable offers you the ability to run an affiliate program all right from within your dashboard. If you choose to use the Teachable payment processor they will accept payments for you and handle your affiliate payouts (however, transaction fees apply). There really isn’t a platform that will do all this for you at the low price they offer.

The main disadvantage of Teachable is that you cannot customize your online course sales pages and your online course area as much as you’d like. Your sales page and your online course will look like they are running on the Teachable platform to anyone who has seen it before. This may not really be much of a problem, but if you want to add in more quiz capabilities or any features this platform doesn’t have, you won’t be able to. You will be limited to what they offer. This is more a limitation of hosted LMS platforms in general and not just a disadvantage of Teachable.

There are a few disadvantages of Teachable specifically. For instance, I had problems connecting it to ConvertKit and had to use Zapier to get it to work seamlessly. Zapier integrations will require extra fees as well as extra time to get it working properly.

In addition, Teachable has high transaction fees. You won’t take home as much of your money when you use this platform. However, it’s easier to get your course business up and running with it. Lastly, you cannot completely white label the platform.

Competing Tools

Thinkific is an online course platform with many similarities to Teachable. There is only a slight difference in features between Thinkific vs Teachable. Both are cloud LMS platforms. If you’re interested in a WordPress LMS plugin then take a look at LearnDash or LifterLMS. However, these will take significantly more time to set-up and maintain. A cloud LMS like Teachable or a Teachable alternative will be much easier to get up and running.
